Default Shock or fire?

Im about to make my first ele and I realized that I dont have to wait the entire damn game for some decent lightning skills. I would like to make one but I dont know how well they stack up compared to a fire nuker

If you can somehow prove to me that been able to slow opponents down while grouped with people that don't seem to know how to kite then yes Water would be viable. The only thing water has going for is Blurred Vision. And even you might aswell go for Air EP and use Blinding Flash. Besides, you can bring a ranger and just ask him to bring along Barbed Trap/Snare if you need slowing.

For pvp Air seems like its increasing in popularity...
but for pve fire is still the way to go if you wanna be the typical nuker!

Lmao, the first part made me laugh out loud. You have a good point there, but would it not be useful, for say snaring a single enemy so that your own party could catch up to it, or perhaps to slow adjacent enemies so that you can kite? I'm just tossing out ideas here....

It would be useful yeah. In terms of ability to totally shutdown caster bosses a nice Maelstrom would suffice. Frozen Burst is great to 'pull a runner' from warriors that just converged on you. The thing is its just as easy to throw Enervating Charge onto 1, Blinding Flash the other, put Ether Prodigy up and continue to blind them till they turn blue.

Air is definatly the way to go if you plan on doing harder missions with henchman. I did see a Water Ele in FoW though last week using Mist Form, a bit of a waste of the elite slot really, but she made a brilliant tank against rampaging groups of Berserkers If only our SS necro wasn't dead...

Really for PvE you can try anything, especially with an all guildie group that is more interested in having you join the team than what specifically you are playing. Not to discount an organized group where there are roles to play or certain zones or missions where one realm is better than others, of course.

I've used all 4 elements at one time or another and so have a head piece for each to be at 16 plus an associated staff, so can pretty much run any build I have the skills for. No need to limit yourself to one type, just don't try to do too much at once.

Lol, i have all 5 Eyes, i even bought an Energy Storage Third Eye for the sheer hell of it 2 weeks ago... Got a Wand + Focus (nearly all the greens because i couldn't be arsed to find collectors for em). I still don't use them much though. Air and Fire i use most. Earth i use occasionally when i'm bored and want to EQ/AS things. Water i barely ever use, for shutting down you might aswell use Air, for damage you might aswell use Air/Fire. Only use i've found for it is to run from Beacons to Droks using mostly Water Magic.

I'm guilty of that too, I'm afraid. Four eyes all told, though not one for energy storage because I've got a ES major rune on each of my shoes. Collector wands and foci (yes, foci - there's only one "i" - and it drives me crazy when I see two) for each, too. Took an agonizingly long couple hours to get them all to. 20/20 earth scroll, 20 earth wand; 20/20 storm artifact, 20 air wand; 20/20 flame artifact, 20 fire wand; 20/20 frost artifact, 20 water wand; even the 20/20 energy storage scroll which I've never used (and is called, oddly enough, an "Earth Scroll" as well). And I also have six sets of armour for her... Funnily enough none of my other characters seem to have the same inventory problem.

Hehehe, most my characters are in that situation. My mesmer, necro, monk and ele all have a 55 set of armour w/ Sup runes. They have plenty of wand+foci () for each stat (mesmer and necro are mainly collectors). For my warrior and ranger its a bit odd... i have 5 pairs of gauntlets for each attribute and a blank 1 (instead of a helm cos Knights helm looks good ), 2 helms, my ranger just has 4 Masks, 3 boots and 2 gloves. They have it worse for weapons though, you only really need 1 set of weapons as a caster for each attribute. Ele having the most of course, but having to find loads of Bows, Swords, Axes, Hammers, Shields and even (trapping) Staffs for each possible situation sucks...

We seem to have gone waaaaaaaaaay off topic

Indeed we have

I'm in the same conundrum though, I have the last two bags w/ hold runes filled with armor sets and weapon sets for each of my characters.... Whew that was a pain finding all of those collectors and the things needed to craft all that stuff

getting a lil' bit back ON topic...

i find water eles to be nice flag runners. well, i guess water/air. armor of mist is great for running, plus you can ice spikes/water trident the other runner if you happen to meet in the middle. plus, with half air, you can throw out a bunch of blinding flashes/enervating charges on the warriors, sins, and rangers. that's just my preference.

and yeah, you can try pretty much anything in pve. i know i have. :P
if you are doing something tough, go fire. if not, have fun. and for the elite missions, an earth ele helps out a bit, provided your party knows how to NOT sit around in wards.

I use a fire build for nuking in areas where the AI mobs group together. Air build for spiking bosses, smaller groups or groups that tend to stay just far enough apart to make a nuke target only one at a time. This is pve. In pvp I've only used air with earth builds successfully. (Just me-other biulds are good but don't work as well for my style) Water and Earth builds take some imagination and experience so as a new ele I would suggest air and fire to start then try the others once you learn how to use your ele.

[Sarcasm] If you ask around, general opinion is that support classes in general arent viable in pve [/Sarcasm]

No, as was said by Shadow, play how you want. There is no class or attribute that is unviable in any situation - if that were the case then i would have deleted my smiting monk long ago

And just to clarify: 16 smiting, 12 inspiration and 4 prot (for rebirth) - no defensive skills at all and i still enjoy using her

Fire is useless. A pity Fireball owns.
